How To Get Rid Of Flies

How To Get Rid Of Flies

Whilst we offer several pest control services, there are precautions you can take to deter flies in your home or workplace. Learning how to get rid of flies can protect you from diseases that they can carry. It will even avoid the nuisance of flies buzzing around your premises altogether. If you work in retail, flies being present can offer the wrong first impression for your visitors, so it is important to get rid of them for your own benefit. Found around your home, the flies can be a sign of further issues that, in some cases, could lead to bigger expenses.

What Attracts Flies?

Although it may seem obvious to state, the flies you find around your home or business can vary in terms of what has attracted them. There are a vast number of different fly species, but we will focus on the 3 most common flies you can expect to see: house flies, fruit flies and drain flies.

          • Houseflies : the housefly is attracted to faeces and rubbish. They are also attracted to the scent of rotting meat. In the summer months where high temperatures can accelerate the decomposition of food, houseflies can be far more prevalent than other times in the year.

          • Fruit flies: The common fruit fly, like the house fly, is attracted to the decomposition of foods. Unlike houseflies however, they prefer the scent of fruits that may be decomposing or fermented fruits such as that found in beers, ciders and other alcohols.

          • Drain flies: Finally, a common type of fly found around homes and businesses is the drain fly. They are found wherever stagnant water is present, a clogged sink for example.

An important note for these flies is that they are not a sign of living in a filthy home. Flies live year-round and live for around 30 days, during which time they can lay hundreds of eggs. Your house could be spotless, but it only takes one to slip through a vent and find your pets litter tray or a patch of sugary drink on the kitchen counter for them to call your premises their home.

How Do I Stop Flies In My House?

A “simple” solution to fly removal is to clear your rubbish but this more or less a short-term solution. Likewise, removing drain flies can be as “simple” as flushing through the stagnant water. Should the problem persist, there may be more than meets the eye which could explain why you have a persistent fly problem. The following are some home remedies you can try to help you with fly removal around your home on a longer term basis.

Scents

We mentioned in our guide to deterring birds that strong smells can be used to get rid of birds from your premises and that is no different when it comes to fly removal in your house. When the door is open in the warmer time of year, your home can draw in many insects such as flies. A flies sense of smells is stronger compared to a human’s and therefore they are more reactive to scents such as citrus oils and incense placed close to said open doors and windows. Unlike traditional pesticides or chemicals, using essential oils and incense can be pleasing to yourself whilst having the same deterrent effect.

Light

Light can be a tool which can be used in the fly removal process to lure flies to a specific area, away from the area they may be infesting. You can use short wavelength lights such as ultraviolet light to pull them away. Pairing this with other tools such as a zapper or a sticky trap can help you keep the flies confined to a specific area away from your home or commercial space. If preferred, outdoor lights can be used if your aim is to remove them from the premises completely. Using a purpose-built light trap keeps the flies hidden once they’re caught, preventing an unsightly view in your home or business.

Call The Fly Removal Professionals

When it comes to home remedies and tools, there is only so much you may be able to do which is why there comes a point in time when you need to call in the professionals. The techniques listed above don’t necessarily remove flies altogether. By calling a team like Regional Environmental Services, we can use our expertise to remove the infestation from your business.

Our team can start with a site assessment to understand the root cause of the problem. Understanding your site and what is going wrong can help you prevent other potential insect issues such as an ant infestation. Once a site assessment has been completed, problem areas can be pin pointed – presenting a long-term prevention strategy to resolve long standing issues you may be facing.

Regional Environmental also offer solutions for bird, bird waste/fouling and pest control problems in the whole of London, Salisbury and surrounding areas with a real understanding of the issue.
